Norberto Bobbio

Norberto Bobbio (Turin, 1909 – 2004) was both a witness and a protagonist among the most eminent figures of the 20th Century. His vast body of writings contributed to the shaping of Italian political and legal culture of his time and beyond. The influence of his intellectual and moral teaching was and remains even greater than his scientific production. He was a man of dialogue, who through the rigour and clarity of his interventions succeeded in involving not only international scholars in the debate over public issues, but also many citizens for whom he became the symbol and critical conscience of civil Italy.

The National Committee for the celebrations of the Centenary of Norberto Bobbio's Birth, constituted by the Italian Minister of Culture, appointed the President, Gastone Cottino and the Treasurer, Gianfranco Baldi, and established its office within the Piero Gobetti Studies Centre. The Committee is composed of more that one hundred Italian and international public institutions and intellectual figures, and has formulated a wide-ranging programme of activities. These aim to map out enduring pathways of recollection and historical reconstruction, dialogue and reflection on the thought and figure of Norberto Bobbio and on the future – with Bobbio and beyond Bobbio - of democracy, culture and civilisation. The objective is to facilitate the participation of all citizens in the commemoration of one of the significant intellectual and moral figures of 20 th Century Europe.

The anticipated four major areas of work are :

  • Norberto Bobbio’s body of writings, to facilitate the publication of the complete critical edition (January 2009 – December 2012);
  • Bobbio Exhibition and the 20 th Century (October 2009 – January 2010)
  • Congress "From the 20 th to the 21 st Century. The future of Norberto Bobbio" (Turin, 15-17 October 2009) and International seminar ‘Invitation to Dialogue' (Turin, April-December 2009)
